Boo!
Did I scare you? Good. Now that we’re done with the trick, here’s the treat: the second edition of Spyglass is published, and there is an abundance of new stories waiting for you to read.
In the midst of fall, Spyglass’s publishing isn’t the only reason for celebration. We are also celebrating various holidays, including Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and Chuseok, which are each highlighted in this edition.
The past few weeks have been nothing short of eventful—at Westridge and the larger world. From the looming threat on Cozy December covered by Editor Tekle S.-J. to the exciting Discovery Week trip announcements written by Website Manager Gemma A., our staff has been picking up stories left and right to deliver this edition to the community.
Spyglass can publish these stories freely because of our student press freedom, which mirrors the First Amendment right to freedom of the press. In the current state of our nation, there are concerns about possible impediments to our First Amendment rights, including freedom of the press. After discussions about recent events, such as the new rules for journalists at the Pentagon, a town meeting on freedom of speech, and a visit from journalist Deanna Kizis, the editorial board has been thinking a lot about the importance of understanding our First Amendment rights, specifically as journalists. You can read the editorial where we outline our thoughts here.
I hope you enjoy the edition!
Love, Valentina
