About The Song
Released August 26, 2022 by Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey, the album Everything I Know About Love includes 16 songs. One of these songs is “Fragile,” which explores the tender and pure moments shared with a lover. Laufey described the origins behind the song in an acoustic rendition of “Fragile” on her YouTube channel: “I grew up very sensitive, very fragile, and this is kind of about some of my first encounters with somebody hammering at the box around me. You know, dealing with my fragility.” The song talks about the fragility of romance and life. It speaks to the uncertainties of relationships and acknowledges that sometimes one has to take chances. The protagonist remembers a past love and how it turned to dust with time. Laufey’s lyrics state, “Now I sit around and rust in rain / Turn into dust as I just wait / For somеone to hold me like you did that night I still rеmember.” The loss of sensibility ties into losing hope and feeling helpless in the wake of life’s failures. In an interview with Laufey, she talked about how “Fragile” was about being vulnerable with a boy for the first time. “I grew up very protected and shy around boys and when I felt myself really liking someone there were so many new emotions and I remember just how Fragile I felt,” Laufey said. In the later part of the song, she remembered that time and missed her experience with the boy. The song serves as a powerful reminder not to be afraid of taking chances and to embrace the fragile aspects of life.
About the Artist
“As a musician, my goal is to bring jazz and classical music to my generation through a more accessible road,” composer, singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey said on her website. Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir, known by her mononym Laufey (pronounced “lay-vay”), is a multifaceted musician whose talents include songwriting, singing, and playing the piano and cello. Laufey’s mother was a classical violinist, so her interest in music blossomed at a young age. Along with classical music, Laufey is also heavily influenced by musicians like Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole because of her father’s affinity for jazz. Falling in love with the genre, Laufey decided to attend the jazz-focused Berklee College of Music rather than a classical conservatory. At age 15, Laufey made her solo debut as a cellist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. She debuted in 2020 with her single “Street by Street,” gaining the attention of industry icons like Billie Eilish, Willow Smith, V of BTS, and Dodie. All her songs are based on her personal experiences in the past years. Her co-producing process is just as personal. She composes, arranges, and plays cello on several of her tracks, and her mother and twin sister (Junia) have even contributed violin to her songs. Laufey’s music is a captivating blend of contemporary jazz and pop, capturing the love of many listeners.
