Dear New 9th Graders,
The chatter of Westridge girls in the morning brings me back to my first days of high school. Joining a new school was tough—I didn’t know the ins and outs of Westridge. At first, the dress code was confusing. In summary, I was lost—not on campus, but in the invisible customs of Westridge. Did you know that free dress is every other Friday? However, people act like it’s every day. Also, did you know Tuesdays are Cookie Tuesdays? From the kindness of my heart, here are my own takeaways from my Upper School experiences, along with some tips for a successful freshman year.
- For those lucky Tigers who have a free block, it’s okay not to do your work. Your free block is the prime time for a nap, a quick catch-up on a show, and, greatest of all, chatting with your friends. If you have a free block with a friend, you’re never going to get work done, but you will get the best, funniest memories out of it. Make TikToks, play games, watch the latest TV shows (keep in mind, streaming isn’t usually allowed), and have fun—but every once in a while, be sure to lock in. On a more serious note, your free block is also a time for meeting with teachers, which can be intimidating, but is useful nonetheless.
- Skirts. Oh, how we love our khaki skirts here at Westridge. Sadly, there are no ways around it: rolling it 10 times to the point you can’t even see it is Westridge Tiger tradition. Be ready to shop only for green, black, and white shirts, hoodies, and sweats. But beware: don’t get caught without your skirt! Also, DO NOT wear college gear unless you’re a senior—you don’t want to be called out. Currently, my wardrobe is a never-ending sea of greens and whites, paired with the dedicated handkerchief of a khaki skirt.
- Hungry and stuck in class? Make sure to stock up on snacks during the morning block after your first period. You can’t buy anything from the Commons during Lower School and Middle School lunch. To avoid this, keep in mind that their lunch is usually during that block before lunch. Also, please note that the Commons is open after 3:10 pm for those who need an after-school snack. I’d recommend the strawberry shortcake ice cream. It’s the best! Also, look out for good lunches like grilled cheese and tomato soup, fiesta bar, and potato bar – basically any lunch that has “bar” in it.
Freshman year can be a blast of fun if you manage it right. Create good routines and make time for friends, but don’t forget to find time to study as well. Westridge’s community is very welcoming to new students, so make sure to enjoy it! I promise, nobody here bites. Our community is always positive and never lacks affection. Although it’s challenging to change schools and adapt to a new schedule, students and faculty alike understand this. While it might be difficult to make new friends or try new things, the community at Westridge helps make things less stressful. Just don’t forget to enjoy the present, or you’ll regret not having fun.
Sincerely,
Isis L. ’28
