Mock Caucus Raises Questions About Students’ Civic Engagement

The 2020 Iowa Caucus left millions of Democrats feeling anxious and confused. With eight major Democratic candidates still remaining in the race, the trajectory of the 2020 election, as well as the legitimacy and integrity of the voting process in this country, has the public wondering if the U.S. will see another four years of a Trump presidency.

Twice a year—once before winter break and once at the end of the year—Westridge’s maintenance crew sets up three tables piled high with water bottles, sweatshirts, and other lost and found items hoping to be reunited with their owners.

On January 31st, Westridge students Quinn N. ’20 and Nica K. ’21 looked at their inboxes to find an email notifying them that they had won Scholastic writing awards--a Gold key and Silver key respectively. Gold Keys are the highest level of award, followed by Silver Keys, then Honorable Mentions.

Before the 2019-2020 school year, Westridge received an anonymous grant from an alumna specifically for improving diversity on campus. The first step of the grant was bringing in Elizabeth Denevi, the director of East Ed: Eastern Educational Resource Collaborative, for a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training with the faculty and staff.
