Stephen Parlato holds a sign with the words, “Hands Off Roe,” outside of the U.S. Supreme Court on Dec. 1, 2021, protesting a 2018 law that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

On May 3, a draft opinion suggesting that the Supreme Court intends to strike down Roe v. Wade was leaked and obtained by POLITICO. The Supreme Court has confirmed that the leaked draft about the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision protecting a woman’s access to abortion without government restriction, is authentic, but not final.

If the Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade, each state will be able to determine policies around abortion. As of now, 13 states already have trigger laws, which means that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion bans will go into effect immediately.
