Unlike other classrooms on campus, identified by sterile combinations of letters and numbers, RB65 is unequivocally known as the Latin Room—and for good reason. Roman paraphernalia deck the walls from floor to ceiling: busts of stoic emperors, maps of ancient conquests, and Latin phrases that whisper wisdom (and maybe a touch of intimidation) to anyone who dares enter. Yet, perhaps the crowning jewel of the Latin Room is not its decor but Dr. Malspeis herself.
Dr. M graces the classroom with her meticulously curated outfits, a striking departure from the typical sweatpants-under-skirt-clad, semi-greasy-haired, sleep-deprived chic Westridge student. Although she guides her students through the labyrinthine complexities of Vergil and Ovid, her true magnum opus might just be her impeccable wardrobe.
Drawing inspiration from the 1950s and 1960s, Dr. M described her style as, “the Mad Men look.” She continued, “I love that real earthy suede leather, denim, like you should be riding a horse or something. Or, anything from the ’50s or ’60s. I love that. I guess you could call it the Mad Men look.”
“This all started because I started going to the thrift stores this summer and just thrifting everything. And I literally got my hands on a bunch of really fun clothes. So now I buy cashmere sweaters and resell them, too.”
Here are some highlights from Dr. M’s closet lately.
