We’re back!
Just as I thought spring had arrived, the winter blues struck Westridge this past week with torrents of rain and breezes too cold for a Southern California school. That means it’s March—the month in constant limbo between winter and spring.
Spyglass doesn’t always publish in March because of how Discovery Week and Spring Break fall on the calendar. But, after the devastating Eaton fire prompted us to publish an emergency edition on January 31, we had to restructure our publishing schedule, and thus, the March 10 Edition was born.
To me, these last few weeks have certainly felt like the start of a “new normal,” but I recognize that it comes from a place of privilege. Our community is still healing and giving back to the places and people we love. Naturally, Spyglass is there to cover it. This edition, you can read about Westridge’s successful February donation drive and how the $450,000 of raised community relief funds are being distributed and allocated. You can also see the aftermath of the fire through Vera M. ’27’s photo essay coverage of Altadena.
With more than a month in between this publishing and our last, we got back to our roots in the newsroom and started investigating again. Editor and Social Media Manager Mirella C. ’25 and I wrote about students who found nonprofits at Westridge and why they do so. Editors Tekle S.-J. ’27 and Rebecca L. ’27 talked to dozens of students about their Discovery Week options, many of whom weren’t particularly happy.
I also wasn’t happy, so I took to the Opinion section, writing about how all trips should be given a fair shot. You can read that piece, here. If you want to read more about our writers’ own perspectives, you can read Tekle’s review of Paddington (I need to watch it!) or Vera’s postcard from 52 days after losing her house.
In between all of this, don’t forget to read our athletics coverage, profile on one dazzling Westridge actress, and whatever makes you chuckle in our Etc. section.
Happy reading!
