During this uncertain time following the Los Angeles fires, people can feel helpless, which may contribute to feelings of anxiety and guilt. Volunteering and getting involved in your community can create an outlet for these feelings and cultivate hope. Here is a list of ways you can contribute to the fire relief efforts both on and off campus.
Campus-wide opportunities:
- Donate to the Westridge Community Relief Fund to support Westridge families and alumni who were displaced by the wildfires.
- Westridge is hosting a donation drive for students of local schools and is accepting donations until February 3. Donations of new or gently used books and school supplies can be given to volunteers at carline or deposited in special bins located in the State Street parking lot. Baked goods can also be dropped off on Saturday, February 8 from 10–12 pm.
Donations in the greater area:
- Donate to the Pasadena Humane to support their efforts to aid and house animals displaced by the wildfires. The local animal shelter has taken in and treated over 700 animals affected by the fires, on top of the already-large number of animals housed at the shelter for adoption.
- Support the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank by donating or delivering food for individuals affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. Shelf-stable and canned foods are needed for people without running water or power.
Volunteer Opportunities Outside of School:
- Sign up here to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild LA and heal the communities most affected by the wildfire. Individuals willing to lift and carry heavy equipment are needed to aid the construction efforts.
- Alternatively, you can work to sort donations and distribute them to people in need at the Pasadena Community Job Center. The Job Center serves as a point of connection for fire victims to services and support.
- In addition, at the Collins and Katz Family YMCA, you can help by putting together care packages for people affected by the wildfires as well as organizing donations.
